The Harz Gebirgslauf draws over 3000 runners and walkers to the densely-wooded Harz mountain range on the former border between East and West Germany.
The start and finish are on the edge of Wernigerode, a picturesque town with many colourful half-timbered buildings and a fairy-tale castle on a hill above town.
Competitors can choose between four up-and-down loop courses — the 5km, 11km or 22km race, or the 42.2km Brocken Marathon which takes runners across the windswept summit of the Brocken (1141m), the Harz's highest mountain (pictured).
The marathon route features over 1000 metres of ascent and the same of descent, mostly on dirt roads and trails.
In 2012, the Brocken Marathon winners were Robert Schulz (2:55:12) and Tatiana Mitkina (3:28:36). The time limit to finish the marathon is six hours.
