The Harz Gebirgslauf (‘Harz Mountain Run’) is held annually on the second Saturday of October in the densely-wooded Harz mountain range which is located on the former border between East and West Germany.

It's a long-standing and popular multi-terrain running event with over 3,000 participants, offering challenging up-and-down loop courses for runners ...

All routes begin and end in Hasserode on the edge of Wernigerode, a picturesque old town with many colourful half-timbered buildings and a fairy-tale castle towering on a hill above the town.

The Brocken-Marathon features a gruelling route that takes the runners across the windswept summit of the Brocken (1,141m), the Harz's highest mountain (pictured above). The course includes more than 1,000 metres of ascent. The entry limit for the marathon is 1,000 runners.
