Held in the town of Varaždin in northern Croatia, the Varaždinski polumaraton attracts around 450 runners, mostly from Croatia, Slovenia and Hungary.

The event comprises a half marathon, a 5k run, and children's races.

Start is at the "Stadion Sloboda" near Varaždin's beautiful baroque old town centre. The finish line is on the athletics track inside the stadium.

Apart from one bridge (which runners have to cross twice) the half marathon route is very flat and fast. The course is AIMS-certified and closed to traffic.

Participants run through residential areas, past the castle (pictured), and out and back a quiet country road.
