The Varaždinski polumaraton is held each September in Varaždin, an old town of about 44,000 people, situated in the far north of Croatia near the borders with Slovenia and Hungary.
It's a road running event popular with runners of all ages. Four race distances are available:
- 500m, 1km dječje utrke (children's races; on Saturday)
- 5km utrka građana (5k run)
- 21.1km polumaraton (half marathon)
Starting on Kapucinski trg (Capuchin Square) on the edge of the very beautiful Baroque Old Town, the half marathon route takes the runners through the town centre, around the castle (pictured) and through residential and rural areas.
The course is mainly flat.
