Bagnoli della Rosandra (Italy), Saturday 18 June 2011
An international field of trail runners met on Saturday afternoon in the village of Bagnoli della Rosandra in the far north-east of Italy for the 2nd Trail Jamarun, a lovely small running event which features an outstandingly scenic route.
The race was staged in the Val Rosandra, a spectacular gorge on the edge of the cosmopolitan port city of Trieste. Over 200,000 people live in this fascinating city, which is squeezed in between the northern Adriatic and the 400-metre-high Karst Plateau.
The circular route took runners through the gorge and up to the plateau with its beautiful open grassland. Parts of the course ran through neighbouring Slovenia.
Michele Ermacora and Valentina Bonanni, both top runners from the region, secured victory ahead of strong athletes from Italy, the U.S., Bulgaria and El Salvador.
