Plan de Corones Run 2010
Bruneck/Brunico (Italy), Saturday 18 September 2010
Start of the race is in Bruneck in South Tyrol.
A new mountain running event will be held in September in Italy's alpine, largely German-speaking province of South Tyrol (Italian: Alto Adige).
The route is 31 kilometres long and climbs approximately 1500 metres.
Participants run along asphalt and dirt roads. The final section of the route follows a hiking trail.
Start is at an elevation of 835 metres in the small and pretty town of Bruneck (Brunico) in the Pustertal (Val Pusteria), a green valley that runs east-west through the province into Austria.
The finish is at 2275 metres on the top of Kronplatz (Italian: Plan de Corones), a lump of a mountain with a rounded top.
From the finish, there are great panoramic views of the Dolomites (to the south) and the Zillertal Alps (to the north).
Kronplatz is criss-crossed by cycle routes and footpaths, and in winter it's a popular ski area with over 100 kilometres of pistes. The Giro d'Italia bicycle race finished on top of the mountain twice.
After lunch and the award ceremony, a cable car brings the participants back down to the valley.
In case you have some energy left you can do the same race again on the next day - on your bike.
The route runs through the village of Sankt Lorenzen (San Lorenzo) in the Puster Valley.
