32nd Karst Half Marathon 2010
Aurisina (Italy), Sunday 3 October 2010
Over 450 runners took part in last year's "La Mezza di Aurisina", a half marathon race held in the vicinity of the port city of Trieste in the north-east of Italy.
Starting and finishing in the village of Aurisina, the race follows an out-and-back course across the Karst plateau, which rises steeply from the Adriatic coast.
Although Aurisina is located just about one kilometre from the seashore, the village is at an elevation of 140 metres above sea level.
The route is undulating, with the first five kilometres or so being slightly uphill.
Unfortunately, there are very few traffic regulations along the course, although the first (and the last) 6.5 kilometres are run on a busy main road.
The finisher buffet and the pasta party, however, held after the race in a small park, are really nice, and there are many fine prizes for the best finishers as well.
In 2009, the winners were Ethiopia's Dereje Hailegiorgis (1:05:27) and Paola Veraldi from Trieste (1:21:04).
