2nd Wine Town Marathon

Runners cross the Ponte del Diavolo in Cividale.

Held at the beginning of October, this event in north-eastern Italy offers a half and a full marathon through the wine-growing area between the city of Udine and the border with Slovenia.

In 2010, the 42-kilometre marathon starts in the village of Premariacco. The finish is 3 kilometres further south in the village of Orsaria.

Half marathon runners start at the half-way mark of the marathon.

The undulating route runs along quiet country lanes through a number of villages and small towns.

The largest of these is Cividale del Friuli with 11,000 inhabitants. The old town is a real gem, and running through the historic centre and across the Ponte del Diavolo ("Devil's Bridge") is surely one of the highlights of the course.

In 2009, the marathon winners were Franco Plesnikar (2:31:27) and Croatia's Marija Vrajić (2:55:42).

Race centre: at the start (Saturday 2 Oct 14.00-20.00, on the day 7.00-8.30)

You get: timing chip rental, bus service to the start (for half marathon runners), goody bag, finisher medal (not guaranteed for late entries), pasta party after the race

Prizes: vouchers to the first 10 M/F, practical prizes to category winners; prizes are not cumulative
