8th Palmanova Half Marathon 2010
Palmanova (Italy), Sunday 21 November 2010
The start and the finish are on Piazza Grande.
The Palmanova Half Marathon in north-eastern Italy attracts an ever-growing number of runners. Last year's race had over 2000 finishers, a quarter of them from neighbouring Slovenia.
The rural course through fields and villages on the Friulian Plain is traffic-free and incredibly flat and fast, but apparently it's not certified.
The start and finish are on the hexagonal Piazza Grande in the small town of Palmanova. Built at the end of the 16th century as a Venetian fortress town, Palmanova has the form of a nine-pointed star and is surrounded by a wide moat.
In 2009, the top finishers came from Kenya. Marathon legend Margaret Okayo, former winner of the New York, Boston and London Marathon, was first woman home in a time of 1:11:54. Geoffrey Giikuni won the men's race in a very fast 1:01:12.
Held in November at the end of the running season, the event gives participants the opportunity to clock a fast time as well as to enjoy the Mediterranean climate. The Laguna di Grado on the Adriatic Sea is just around 25 kilometres to the south.
