Troika Race 2010
Ljubljana (Slovenia), Saturday 8 May 2010
Tek trojk is a special event in the Slovene race calendar. It forms part of the annual celebrations held to commemorate the liberation of Ljubljana at the end of World War Two.
Last year, more than 4,000 participated in Slovenia's second largest running event.
To take part in the Troika Race you need to form a team of three runners - female, male or mixed. You must finish the race together with your teammates. Individual runners are not allowed to cross the finish line.
Teams choose between distances of 12km and 28km. Start and finish are on the beautiful Prešeren Square, the heart of the city. The race travels through the old town, through residential areas, and across the densely wooded Golovec Hill.
The Troika Race is mostly a fun event without a prize fund. There are no entry fees. Each team just pays 4 Euros for the timing chip.
In 2009, an outstanding troika (Mitja Kosovelj, Tone Kosmač and Roman Kejžar) celebrated victory in the 28k race in a time of 1:48:57.
The most popular event of the day, however, was the pohod, a traditional 35km walk along the "Path of Remembrance and Comradeship" (POT). Over 22,000 walked along this gravel footpath which indicates where a barbed wire fence surrounded the city from 1942 to 1945.
