11th European Marathon - 15th European Two Castles Half Marathon
The Maratona d'Europa, held every year in the beginning of May, features an interesting route along the Gulf of Trieste in the far north-east of Italy.
The event incorporates three point-to-point races - a full marathon, a half marathon and a highly popular 7km fun run. All races finish in the port city of Trieste.
The full marathon starts off in Gradisca d'Isonzo, an old fortress town built by the Venetians at the end of the 15th century. On their way to Trieste competitors pass Italy's largest military cemetery of World War I in Redipuglia, the shipbuilding town of Monfalcone, the castle and the cliffs of Duino and the castle of Miramare. Finally, they run along the Riviera to the grand finish on Trieste's main square Piazza Unità d'Italia, located right on the seafront.
Half marathon runners join the field at Duino, the 7k fun runners at Miramare.
The course is mostly flat but there are some testing hills around Duino.
In 2009, Justus Kiprono Kipchirchir of Kenya (2:14:47) and Nadir Sabino de Siqueira of Brasil (2:47:02) won the full marathon. The top half marathon finishers were Stefano Zancan (1:09:31) and Paola Veraldi (1:20:22), both of Italy.
