Gorski maraton štirih občin - Mountain marathon of four municipalities
Petrovo Brdo (Slovenia), Saturday 19 June 2010
Wonderful countryside, great mountain scenery and fine views are guaranteed on this 35km loop through the Julian Alps in Slovenia. And some who have done the race say the organization couldn't be any better.
It's a real challenge, however. Overall, the race goes 2550 metres up and 2550 metres down.
The start and the finish are in Petrvo brdo, a small village at an elevation of 800 metres.
The first 10 kilometres are uphill to a mountain ridge in the Triglav National Park (1760m). You descend on a different route down to the valley floor (361m), only to face another long climb up to a mountain hut on the other side of the valley (1590m). From there, it's just downhill to the finish.
The course is well-marked, and there are 17 feed stations along the route, but don't mess about for too long, the time limit stands at eight hours.
It's allowed to use hiking poles.
Last year's race had to be cancelled due to heavy rain and snow on the upper sections of the course. The course records are held by Marko Šubic (3:21:52) and Ines Hižar (3:56:25).
The highest point on the course is on this saddle (Čez Suho, 1760m).
