Romans' Run 2010
Kaindorf an der Sulm (Austria), Saturday 24 July 2010
Walking Pace!
The Römerlauf, held on a summer evening in July, pays tribute to the Romans who founded the city of Flavia Solva around the year 70 AD, close to the modern city of Leibnitz in the south of Austria.
Many runners dress up as Romans, and the teams with the best Roman costumes get a prize.
The event offers a half marathon (21.1km, two laps), a quarter marathon (10.55km) and a 6k run.
The start/finish area is at the Naturparkzentrum Grottenhof, a redeveloped estate near Leibnitz.
Most of the route is flat but after about 3 kilometres the race crosses the Seggauberg, a wooded hill with a castle on top. The elevation gain/loss is approximately 80 metres.
Participants then run a loop around the Sulmsee bathing lake, and finally on a dirt road along the River Sulm back to the finish.
In 2009, the half marathon winners were Erich Kokaly (1:14:15) and Karoline Dohr (1:30:04).
Parts of the course are on trails.
