11a Giro Lago di Resia 2010

11th Lake Reschen Race 2010

The Reschensee is a 6km-long artificial lake in South Tyrol, Italy's predominantly German-speaking province in the Alps. The lake is at an elevation of 1498 metres, very close to the borders with Switzerland and Austria.

Held in high summer, the 15.3km race around the lake has become a hugely popular event. Due to the marked increase in the number of participants, entries have been limited to 3000.

Start and finish are near the 14th-century church tower that rises spookily out of the lake - a reminder that 163 homes were blown up and submerged when the lake was created in 1950.

The setting is beautiful, and the route is right along the lakefront. The course is mainly flat along the eastern shore and undulating in the west. Approximately 80% of the course is on asphalt.

Accommodation is available in hotels and guest houses near the lake. In addition, there are cheap possibilities for camping or staying overnight in the sports hall.

In 2009, the winners were Marco Mazza of Italy (50:04) and Christine Fiedler of Germany (57:58).
