Lake Bohinj, situated in the Triglav National Park in the heart of the Julian Alps, is Slovenia's largest lake, over 4 kilometres long and up to 1.2 kilometres wide.

The clear, cold waters of this deep glacial lake are wonderful for a swim in the summer but you may have to share the beach with the odd cow.

Held in August, the 12k race around the lake is a popular event with more than 500 finishers.

The route runs all the way through woods and across some grassland.

Along the northern shore the race follows a very narrow trail with lots of roots and rocks. On your way back to the finish you run along the footpath beside the road on the southern shore.

The course is mildly undulating and offers beautiful views of the lake.

In 2009, the winners were Sebastijan Zarnik (36:56) and Valerija Mrak (42:52).
