The Wolfgangseelauf & Salzkammergut Marathon is held every year in October at the Wolfgangsee, a 10.3km-long lake in the Salzkammergut region in Austria.
It's a hugely-popular running event that attracts about 4,000 entrants in four races:
Race distance | Ascent, Descent | Start area |
5.2km | +61m, -55m | Strobl |
10km | +34m, -28m | Gschwendt |
27km | +295m, -295m | St. Wolfgang |
42.2km |
+417m, -335m | Bad Ischl |
The finish line is in St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut on the northern shore.

The 27km race is one lap around the Wolfgangsee. This race generally attracts a strong field of international top runners. The course is a super-scenic run on a mixture of asphalt roads, cycleways and gravel paths. The route includes a steep up-and-down section across a wooded hill between Sankt Wolfgang and Sankt Gilgen.
The 42.2km marathon takes the runners from the spa town of Bad Ischl to Sankt Wolfgang (15km gently uphill on a country road) and then, together with the 27km runners, around the lake.
In addition to the above four races, which take place on Sunday, the event offers a Junior-Marathon for children and a non-competitive Walk the Lake for walkers and nordic walkers, held on Saturday.
