Battaglia di Fagagna (Italy), Sunday 21 May 2017
Held every year in May in Battaglia di Fagagna, a very pretty small village in the Province of Udine in the north-east of Italy, the Marcia dei Cajs is a delightful event for runners and hikers alike.
It's a non-competitive event. Finishing times are not recorded. Prizes are awarded to the largest groups, not to the fastest finishers.
The entry fees are very low (€ 2.50 for registrations on the day).
You can choose between three very scenic routes (5km, 10km, 20km) which are well marked and marshalled. You can still decide on the course which route you want to take.
All three routes are multi-terrain loops (mainly on trails) through woods, vineyards and flowery meadows. The 20km route also passes the beautifully-preserved medieval Castello d'Arcano.
As the marcia takes place on the last day of the Sagre dai Cajs, an annual festival in Battaglia di Fagagna, runners get the opportunity to taste some local specialities after the run, such as Cajs (snails) or Frico, a cheese-based dish that is typical for the region.
