Held annually on a Saturday night in May, the Schweriner Nachtlauf attracts approximately 1,000 runners to the old city of Schwerin which sits on the vast Mecklenburgische Seenplatte (Mecklenburg Lake Plateau) in northern Germany.

Surrounded by lakes in all directions, Schwerin is a magnificent place for distance running, cycling and swimming.

The Nachtlauf (Night Run) offers the possibility to run either one lap (5km), two laps (10km), three laps (15km) or four laps (20km) of a stunningly-scenic course through the historic city centre.

The route takes the runners through Schwerin's impressive Altstadt, around two lakes (the Pfaffenteich and the Burgsee), across the Schlossinsel (a little island that is home to one of Germany's most beautiful castles) and through the baroque Schlossgarten.

The event also features a relay for teams of four runners (4x5km), children's races and a 5km nordic walking race.
