Staged in Ratekau, a village of 4,000 people in Germany's northernmost state of Schleswig-Holstein, Rund um Ratekau ("Around Ratekau") is a popular running event that attracts approximately 1,000 participants of all ages and abilities.

Of these, the 10k is the most prestigious race. Last year, the fastest finishers were Mengistu Zelalem of Ethiopia (30min 25sec) and Isabell Teegen of Germany (35min 12sec).
All races begin and end on Ratekau's athletics track. The kids run 400 metres on the track. The 5k and the 5.5k for walkers are single-loop courses whereas the 10k consists of two laps (7km+3km). The 10k route is gently undulating, accurately measured and certified.
The race is run mainly on asphalt roads, cycleways and pavements. A short section is on cobbles. Approximately 600 metres of the 5k are run on gravel.
The route takes the runners through the village, through woods and farmland, and past a beautiful 12th-century church.
It's well worth to spend a few days in the area. Ratekau sits in a very convenient location, just about 4km from the spa town of Bad Schwartau, 8km from the Baltic Sea resort of Timmendorfer Strand and 10km from the city of Lübeck.
