Faaker See (Austria), Sunday 9 July 2017
The Faakerseelauf in Austria offers two races — a 10.55km Panoramalauf (one lap) and a 21.1km Halbmarathon (two laps).
The route is a very scenic loop around the Faaker See, a popular summer holiday destination in the state of Kärnten in the southern part of the country, situated near the borders with Slovenia and Italy.
For the most part, the race is run on asphalt roads through lovely scenery and pretty villages. Approximately one kilometre of the route is on forest trails.
There are a number of testing ascents as well. From start to finish, the half marathon features about 170 metres of elevation gain!
For the time of the race, the course is closed to all traffic.
Last year, Jan Adriaensen of Belgium (33min 28sec) defended his title in the Panoramalauf, leading an international crowd of 676 runners across the finish line. Nina Lauwaert, also of Belgium, was the fastest woman in a time of 39min 48sec.
The half marathon had 234 finishers. The winners were Eric Muthomi Riungu of Kenya (1hr 8min 19sec) and Czech athlete Petra Pastorová (1hr 23min 57sec).
