One of Germany's biggest and fastest marathon races is held annually in late October on the streets of Frankfurt am Main, a city of about 730,000 inhabitants, located in the heart of a densely-populated metropolitan area in central western Germany.

Last year, Sisay Lemma (2:06:26) and Gulume Tollesa (2:23:12), both of Ethiopia, led an international crowd of 11,166 marathon runners and 1,755 relay teams across the finish line.

Many runners have set a personal best time in the Frankfurt Marathon, although the course is not completely flat. The difference between the lowest and the highest point on the course is 27.8 metres.

The route begins and ends at the Messe Frankfurt, the world's second-largest trade fair grounds, situated around two kilometres west of the historic city centre.

The finish is inside the Festhalle, a more-than-100-year-old multi-purpose hall with a magnificent steel-and-glass dome.
