Cologne, this vibrant one-million city on the River Rhine, is not only home to Germany's largest carnival (the Kölner Karneval) as well as to Germany's most visited sight (the Kölner Dom), it also plays host to one of the biggest running events in the country, the Köln Marathon.

Last year, more than 10,000 runners took part in the 21.1km half marathon, the most popular of the races on offer. About 4,400 individual runners and more than 600 relay teams ran the 42.2km marathon.

The event is well known for its cheerful atmosphere and its excellent crowd support.

Starting in Köln-Deutz on the right bank of the Rhine, the marathon takes the runners at first westwards to the city centre and then to the southern, western and northern parts of Cologne. The finish line is at the imposing Cathedral in the heart of the city. The course is mostly flat.
