Vratimov (Czech Republic), Saturday 1 October 2016
With 82 finishers last year, the Zlatý podzim ("Golden Autumn") 10k road race in the Czech Republic is a rather small running event.
It deserves attention, however, as it gives runners the opportunity to take part in a long-standing local race that is held in a fine relaxed atmosphere in an interesting area far off the beaten tourist tracks.
The race begins and ends at the Cultural Centre of Vratimov, a small town with a long industrial heritage—like the neighbouring city of Ostrava, the third-largest city in the country.
The route is an undulating loop through residential and agricultural areas. The course is not closed to traffic but most of the roads are rather quiet.
In 2015, the fastest finishers were Milan Hrazděra (32min 34sec) and Hana Slavíková (38min 2sec) who both run for the Lokomotiva Břeclav athletics club.
The course offers fine views of the gigantic Nová huť steelworks.
