Battaglia di Fagagna (Italy), Sunday 15 May 2016
Held annually in mid-May in the village of Battaglia di Fagagna in the Province of Udine in the north-east of Italy, the Marcia dei Cajs is a delightful event for runners and hikers.
A marcia is a non-competitive event, so finishing times are not recorded. Prizes are awarded to the largest groups, not to the fastest finishers.
The entry fees are very low (€ 2.50 on the day).
Three very scenic routes are available (5km, 10km and 20km), all well marked and marshalled. Participants can still decide on the course which route they want to take.
All the routes run on mixed terrain (mainly on trails) through lovely woods, vineyards and flowery meadows. The 20km route also passes the beautifully-preserved medieval Castello d'Arcano.
As the marcia forms part of the annual Sagre dai Cajs festival, runners get the opportunity to taste some of the local specialities after the run, for instance Cajs (snails) or Frico, a cheese-based dish that is typical for the region.
