Monteforte d'Alpone (Italy), Sunday 17 January 2016
Staged in the hills around the village of Monteforte d'Alpone, which sits in a wine-producing region between the cities of Verona and Vicenza, the Montefortiana is one of Italy's most popular sports events.
Every year, approximately 15,000 to 18,000 runners and hikers take part in the Marcia. Three routes through picturesque scenery and villages are on offer — 7km, 14km, and 20km long. The Marcia is a non-competitive event. Finishing times are not recorded, and many participants take their time at the well-stocked feed stations that are scattered along the course.
Ambitious athletes can choose between three races:
- the very hilly 21.1km Maratonina,
- the even hillier 26km Ecorun Turà race (900m of ascent, 900m of descent),
- or the demanding 44km EcoMaratona (1900m of ascent, 1900m of descent).
The half marathon is run asphalt roads whereas the 26km and 44km races are run on mixed terrain (asphalt, gravel and trails). All routes are very scenic.
