Tata in the 16th century - engraving by Georg Hoefnagel (Author: Joris Hoefnagel / commons.wikimedia.org / This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 100 years or less.)

Held on a very scenic course through the old town of Tata in Hungary, the 14km Tatai Minimarathon attracts a crowd of about 1,000 athletes.

The race takes the runners through the Baroque Old Town, through lovely parkland and woods, and around Tata's best sights — the medieval castle, the 2.5km-long Öreg-tó (Old Lake) and the smaller Cseke-tó (Small Lake), all beautifully depicted in the above 16th-century engraving by Georg Hoefnagel.

In 2015, the top finishers were István Dániel Szögi and Simona Staicu.
