Kainach bei Voitsberg (Austria), Sunday 7 August 2016
Starting and finishing in the village of Kainach bei Voitsberg, this Bergmarathon (mountain marathon) takes runners up and down the Gleinalpe (or Gleinalm) mountain range in Austria's state of Steiermark (Styria).
The 44km-long race is open to individual runners as well as to 3-person relay teams.
The route, which features about 1,800m of ascent and 1,800m of descent, is a scenic loop through forests and mountain pastures, mainly on gravel roads and trails.
The start/finish area is at 542m above sea level. The highest point on the course is at an elevation of 1,790m on the grass-covered ridge of the Gleinalpe.
Runners should expect to add at least one hour to their road marathon finishing time. The time limit to complete the course is seven hours. It is not allowed to use hiking poles.
In 2015, the Bergmarathon winners were the Hungarian ultra marathon runners Gábor Muhari (3:33:40) and Réka Kovács (4:36:27).
In addition to the mountain marathon, the event offers an 18.5km nordic walking race.
