Auronzo di Cadore (Italy), Sunday 7 August 2016
La Camignada poi Siè Refuge is a "corsa in montagna non competitiva", a non-competitive mountain running event. Finishing times are recorded, however, and awards are given to the fastest finishers.
Held annually since 1973, the race features a 30km point-to-point route through the breathtaking scenery of the Sexten Dolomites in the far north of Italy.
You will need to be prepared for a real challenge, and you will also have to wear proper clothing. The route includes more than 1,300m of ascent and 2,200m of descent. The highest point on the course is at an elevation of over 2,500m!
Starting at Lago di Misurina (1,752m), which is just about 12km from the ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo, the route passes the famous Three Lavaredo Peaks (Italian: Tre Cime; German: Drei Zinnen), six mountain huts (Italian: sei rifugi), and seven checkpoints. The finish line is in the village of Auronzo di Cadore (864m).
Fortunately, participants can take their time to enjoy the many stunning views. The time limit to complete the course is ten hours.
In 2015, the fastest finishers were Nicola Giovanelli (2hr 35min 19sec) and Silvia Rampazzo (3hr 3min 39sec). The event was sold out, so you better register early if you want to take part in this year's Camignada. The entry limit is 1,500 participants.
