The marathon in Dębno, a small town near the Germany-Poland border, is a classic in the Polish running calendar.

Held for more than 40 years, the race has attracted many international top runners, for instance England's Ron Hill who won the 1975 race in 2:12:35, or Christa Vahlensieck of Germany, the first woman winner in Dębno in 1979 (2:41:57).

In 2015, the marathon had 1,820 finishers. The winners were the Kenyan athletes Felix Kipkorir Kandogo (2:14:28) and Rebecca Jepchuchir Korir (2:44:52).

The event has become so popular that all 2,300 bibs for this year's 43rd Maraton Dębno were sold in less than nine days. Entries were closed on 9 January 2016, almost three months before the start.

The course is flat and fast, it is accurately measured and certified by the Polish Athletic Association, and it is closed to traffic for the time of the race.

It consists of four laps — two loops through Dębno and two longer loops through forests, rural areas and villages.

The time limit to finish the marathon is five hours.
