Held on the Rennsteig hiking trail, which follows the ridge of the Thüringer Wald (Thuringian Forest) hill range in Central Germany, the Rennsteiglauf is Germany's most popular trail running event.

In 2014, over 6500 runners completed the 21.1km half marathon, more than 3000 ran the 43.5km marathon, and around 2150 finished the 72.7km Supermarathon.

Finishing in the resort of Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig, which sits at an elevation of about 700m on the ridge, all races are very hilly point-to-point races. The half marathon starts off in the winter sports resort of Oberhof, the marathon in the small town of Neuhaus, and the ultra marathon in the venerable old town of Eisenach.

The event also features walking and nordic walking tours and a junior cross race.
