Battaglia di Fagagna (Italy), Sunday 17 May 2015
The Marcia dei Cajs is a delightful non-competitive running and hiking event which forms part of the Sagre dai Cajs, a local festival that is held annually in mid-May in the village of Battaglia di Fagagna in the Province of Udine in the north-east of Italy.
In 2014, more than 450 runners and hikers took part in the event which offers three very scenic routes — 5km, 10km, and 20km long.
Participants run or walk, mostly on trails, through many flowery meadows and through lovely woods and vineyards. The 20km route also passes the beautifully-preserved medieval Castello d'Arcano (pictured below).
After the run, participants get the opportunity to sample local specialities at very reasonable rates, for instance Frico (a cheese-based dish typical for the region) or Cajs (snails).
