Wien (Austria), Thursday 31 December 2015
Held every year at 11am on New Year's Eve, the Wiener Silvesterlauf features a very scenic 5.35km loop course around Vienna's Old Town.
The race takes the runners along the imperial Ringstraße which is lined with grandiose monuments and buildings. The route passes, for instance, the Hofburg, the Austrian Parliament buildings, the Rathaus, the Staatsoper, the Burgtheater, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the Stadtpark with the gilded Johann Strauss Monument (pictured).
Last year, Bob Haller of Luxembourg (16min 48sec) and Tereza Korvasová of the Czech Republic (19min 3sec) led an international field of 3,149 runners across the finish line. The time limit to complete the course is a generous 90 minutes.
