The Rubbenbruchsee Marathon in Osnabrück, a city of about 155,000 people in north-western Germany, is a hugely popular running event. So popular that it has been sold out since the beginning of February—more than ten months before race day.

Well, alright, the marathon is capped at 64 participants, so it's a very small event, but it appears that many more runners would like to take part in the race, not only for the lovely setting of the course but also because it's a no-fuss non-profit event that is held in a relaxed atmosphere, at a time when there are very few marathons.

The race is nine laps around the Rubbenbruchsee, a 1.3km-long and 300m-wide lake on the western fringes of the city—a favourite destination for man and deer.

Seven of the nine laps are 5.14km long. The first and the last lap are approximately 3.1km long. The course is a bit undulating.

The route runs on gravel roads through parkland and woods. A 500m-long section is on trails. The entry fees are low (€ 15), and all proceeds will be donated to charity.
