Held annually on New Year's Eve in the city of Nürnberg (Nuremberg) in Germany's state of Bavaria, the Nürnberger Silvesterlauf attracts a crowd of about 1,500 runners.

The 10k is by far the most popular distance, and the race usually fills up well before race day. It seems unlikely that the 5k or the children's races will be sold out.

The route is a 5km-long loop on asphalt paths around the Wöhrder See (pictured), an artificial lake in the eastern part of the city. Participants in the 10k race run two laps of this course.

Steeped in history, Nürnberg is a lively city of half a million people, and well worth a visit for its many reminders of its turbulent past, its outstanding museums, its beautiful half-timbered buildings, and its culinary delights.
