The Wilhelmsburger Insellauf ("Wilhelmsburg Island Run") takes runners on a tour of Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg which is situated on an island in the mighty River Elbe.

Four race distances are on offer — a 1.2km children's race, a 5km run, a 10.55km quarter marathon, and a 21.1km half marathon.

The routes are accurately measured and certified.

The 5k is an out-and-back run through residential areas to a 19th-century windmill. Participants in the longer races also run through farmland and lovely rural areas, along the dikes on the River Elbe, and past some very pretty thatched houses.

More than 2100 runners, walkers and nordic walkers took part in the event last year.
