Salzburg (Austria), Sunday 4 May 2014
Held on a mostly flat and fast and scenic route through Mozart's home town, the Salzburg Marathon attracts an international crowd of well over 4000 participants.
More than 2200 runners finished the half marathon last year, and around 750 ran a second lap of the half marathon course to complete the 42.2km marathon.
Participants in the 10k race run the last ten kilometres of the half marathon course. The event also features a 5k run and a marathon relay race.
All races begin and end on Residenzplatz at the imposing cathedral in the beautiful Old Town — except for the 10k which starts at Leopoldskron Palace, which is about two kilometres further south.
The route takes the runners through urban and rural areas as well as through woods and parkland (partly on gravel), and it offers many fine views of Salzburg's impressive palaces and Baroque buildings.
The time limit to complete the marathon course is 5hr 45min. Participants who have registered for the full marathon can still decide on the course if they want to cross the finish line after one or after two laps.
