The Welschlauf is an atmospheric road running event without a prize fund or elite athletes but lots of fun runners, music, food and locally produced Welsch wine.

The event takes place in the wine-growing Südsteiermark region in Austria's state of Styria, near the border with Slovenia.

Three very hilly and scenic races are on offer — a marathon, a half marathon, and a 10.5km quarter marathon (‘Viertelmarathon’) for runners and nordic walkers.

All races are point-to-point routes which alternate in direction each year.

In 2014, all races will finish in Ehrenhausen (pictured), a very pretty village, located on the train line between the cities of Graz in Austria and Maribor in Slovenia.

The marathon will be started in the village of Wies. Participants in the shorter races will join the marathon field en route to Ehrenhausen.

Race centre: Feuerwehr Leutschach (2 May 2014, 16.00-21.00); in the start areas (on the day before the race)
