The Mezza Maratona Lago di Caldaro is held every year at the end of March at Lake Kaltern in South Tyrol, an amazingly beautiful alpine province in the far north of Italy where native speakers of German and Italian live side by side.

Two race distances are on offer — the 21.1km half marathon (two laps around the lake) and the 10.55km ‘Corsa panoramica’ (one lap).

The route is certified, undulating, and very appealing as it runs all the way through orchards and vineyards and lovely scenery.

In 2013, the fastest half marathon finishers were Hannes Rungger (1:08:46) and Monica Carlin (1:25:03). The time limit to complete the course is 2hr 30min.

Remember that the night before the event the clocks jump one hour forward due to the start of 'European Summer Time', so don't be late!
