Held on three Sunday mornings between January and March, the Winterlaufserie aims at preparing runners for the Vienna City Marathon in mid-April.

All races take place on a 7km loop course in the Prater, Vienna's largest public park. The course is completely flat, accurately measured, and traffic-free.

Participants can decide during the race if they want to run one lap (7km), two laps (14km), or three laps and a bit (21.1km half marathon).

The third event in March also offers the possibility to run four laps (28km).

In 2013, the Winterlauf in January had well over 700 finishers, the event in February more than 800, and the last one in March almost 1000.
