A crowd of 1300 runners took part in last year's Zittauer Gebirgslauf which offers a weekend of sports for runners, hikers, nordic walkers, inline skaters and mountain bikers. Overall, the event welcomes 4000 or more participants every year.

The event is held in the Zittauer Gebirge (Zittau Mountains), a small and beautiful mountain range, situated on the Germany-Czech Republic border (and near the Polish border as well). The mountains are beloved for its lovely forests, picturesque villages and fairy-tale rock formations which can be easily reached by narrow-gauge railway from the nearby town of Zittau.

Runners can choose between four races — 4km, 7.5km, 17km, and 35km long.

Starting and finishing in the village of Olbersdorf (at approximately 300 metres above sea level), all routes are very hilly and scenic, mostly on trails or gravel roads.

The highest point on the 35km-course is at an elevation of about 700 metres.
