Held on a very scenic course through the wetlands of the River Elbe, the Elbdeichmarathon in Germany attracts around 1500 runners.

The event offers a full marathon (two laps), a half marathon (one lap), a 10km out-and-back run, and children's races.

The start and finish are at the port of Tangermünde, a picturesque medieval town, situated approximately 120 kilometres west of Berlin.

Participants run on cycleways on the embankment of the River Elbe (the 'Elbdeich') and on roads through farmland and small villages.

In 2013, the fastest marathon finishers were Karsten Pinno (2:46:02) and Sandra Ricke (3:22:50).
