Düsseldorf (Germany), Sunday 27 April 2014
Approximately 3000 marathon runners and 2000 relay teams took part in last year's marathon race in Düsseldorf, a proud and prosperous city of about 600,000 people, situated in the heart of the densely populated Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region in the far west of Germany.
The start and finish areas are both on the right bank of the River Rhine, in the city centre, but a bit more than one kilometre apart from each other.
The route is gently undulating. It consists of four different loops.
At first, participants run along the river to the northern part of Düsseldorf, then across a bridge to the western part, then to the east, and finally to the south.
In 2013, the top finishers were Dereje Debele Tulu (2:07:48) and Melkam Gizaw (2:26:24), both of Ethiopia. The time limit to complete the course is six hours.
