This road running race in Austria's state of Kärnten (Carinthia) features a very scenic 9.2-kilometre uphill route that includes 518 metres of ascent.

Competitors run Vom See zum Berg — 'From the Lake to the Mountain'.

Starting at the casino in the elegant resort of Velden at the western end of the Wörthersee, one of Austria's most popular summer holiday destinations, the route takes runners on traffic-free roads through lovely countryside and pretty alpine villages to the finish line at a restaurant in the hills of the Ossiacher Tauern.

Most of the route consists of gentle climbs but there are also some short steep sections and a few downhills.

The route offers fine panoramic views of the Karawanks mountain range, and from the finish area runners can get a glimpse of Lake Ossiach as well (pictured above).

From the finish, participants walk (or jog) approximately 1500 metres back to the event centre in the village of Köstenberg, which is home to one of the leading golf courses in Austria. In the afternoon shuttle buses take the runners home to Velden.

In 2012, the winners were Robert Stark (37:47) and Wiltrud Rieberer-Murer (47:52).
