Hamburg (Germany), Sunday 8 September 2013
The Alsterlauf 10k race in Hamburg attracts an international field of around 4500 athletes, among them a number of very fast distance runners.
In 2012, the top finishers were Kenya's Richard Kiprop Mengich (28min 17sec) and Cynthia Kosgei (32min 28sec).
Starting in the city centre competitors run one lap of a more or less flat course around the Außenalster lake whose shores are popular with runners all year round.
Along the route, runners pass Hamburg's Central Station, the renowned Kunsthalle art museum, and innumerable elegant villas on the Außenalster.
The finish line is on the Binnenalster, the smaller one of the two Alster lakes, near Hamburg's main square and the town hall.
