Europe's longest castle — the 1051-metre-long Burg zu Burghausen — provides a stunning backdrop for the Salzach Brückenlauf ("Salzach Bridge Run"), a very scenic and attractive running event on the Germany-Austria border.

Entrants can choose between the 8.7km race, the 3.15km run, and the 5.5km walk. Last year, the event welcomed an international field of 700 runners and 70 walkers.

The start and the finish are on the colourful Stadtplatz in Burghausen's Old Town.

The 3.15km ‘Volkslauf’ runs through the historic town centre and across two bridges across the River Salzach, which forms the border between Germany and Austria.

Participants in 8.7km ‘Hauptlauf’ also run on undulating gravel paths and trails through parkland and around a lovely bathing and rowing lake at the foot of the castle.
