Selz, Ronchi dei Legionari (Italy), Sunday 19 May 2013
Held for 35 years already in the wooded hills of the Carso in the north-east of Italy, the Marcia dei tre laghi attracts a crowd of 2000 or more runners and hikers.
Entrants can choose to run either 5km, 11km, 18km, or 28km — mostly on trails.
All routes begin and end in the village of Selz, situated near the shipbuilding town of Monfalcone in the Gulf of Trieste.
As the Marcia is a non-competitive event without timekeeping, participants are well advised to take their time and enjoy the course through beautiful scenery.
The route passes three lovely lakes and a number of well-restored World War One trenches in the "Parco Tematico della Grande Guerra" ("Great War Open Museum").
There are several well-stocked feed stations on the course.
The first one offers some fine local delicacies — sardines (sardelle), grilled polenta, red wine, white wine, fruit, tea, biscuits, and more!
Runners are well catered for, ...
... they pass the tranquil waters of Lago di Doberdo, ...
... and they run across beautiful grass- and bushland.
