Würzburg (Germany), Sunday 19 May 2013
The Würzburg Marathon takes place in the 1300-year-old city of Würzburg, located in a wine-growing area in northern Bavaria, Germany. The event offers a marathon, a half marathon, a 10k run, a 16k walk, and children's races.
Participants in the marathon run two laps of a certified, gently undulating course that involves both sides of the River Main.
The route visits some outstanding sights, for instance the Residenz (a monumental Baroque palace and a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Romanesque Cathedral, and the Alte Mainbrücke which connects Würzburg's Old Town with the fortress of Festung Marienberg (pictured below).
In 2012, the full marathon had around 600 finishers, and more than 1800 completed the half marathon. Around 300 took part in the 10k run.
