Held on the thinly-populated Karst Plateau which rises from the Adriatic coast in the far north-east of Italy, the Kokos Trail offers a 14k race and an 8k fun run.

Both routes are very hilly, and almost entirely on trails and gravel roads through woods and grassland and along a disused railway track in the spectacular Val Rosandra gorge. The 14k course includes about 500 metres of ascent.

The start and finish are at the football pitch of the village of Basovizza which sits at 377 metres above sea level on the plateau, very close to the port of Trieste.

The highest point on the course is at an elevation of 672 metres on Monte Cocusso (Slovene: Kokoš), a wooded hill on the border with Slovenia.
