Participants in the Ultra Alpine Marathon (or "Veitscher Grenzstaffellauf" by its German name) run a 54km loop around the old mining village of Veitsch, which is situated in a narrow valley on the eastern edge of the Alps, near the railway line between Vienna and Graz.
Last year, 95 ultra marathon runners and 76 relay teams (of three runners each) completed the course — a highly challenging up-and-down loop which features more than 2,000 metres of ascent.
The start and the finish are in the village of Veitsch, at an elevation of 670 metres. The highest point on the course (1860m) is on the 5km-long grassy ridge of the Hohe Veitsch.
The route runs mainly on dirt roads and trails through forests and mountain pastures. Just the first and the last kilometre are on asphalt roads.
In 2012, the Ultra Alpine Marathon winners were Walter Krenn (4:40:21) and Ulrike Striednig (5:41:38).
