Kiel (Germany), Saturday 23 February 2013
There might be a little bit of ice on the Baltic Sea but it's much more likely that the temperatures will be relatively mild and that the course will be free of snow and ice when the Kiel Marathon will be held in February 2013.
In 2012, around 1500 runners took part in either the full marathon, the half marathon, or the 10k race. The entry limit is 1900 runners and 100 walkers.
Kiel is a city of 240,000 in the far north of Germany, about 90km north of Hamburg and 90km south of the border with Denmark. The city sits at the head of the Kiel Fjord (Kieler Förde), which provides a fine setting for the marathon (photo).
The route is a completely flat out-and-back course along the fjord. Participants in the half marathon run two laps. The full marathon consists of four laps.
The start/finish area is at the modern Cruise Terminal Ostseekai in the city centre, where big cruise ships moor during the summer.
